Ingredients
Scale
Sandwich Ingredients
- 1 pound sirloin steak, cooked to desired doneness and thinly sliced
- 8 slices thick-cut sourdough bread
- 4 slices Provolone cheese (or Pepper Jack cheese)
- 1 cup caramelized onions
- ½ cup garlic aioli
- 4 tablespoons butter, softened
Instructions
- Preheat the Griddle or Skillet: Heat a griddle or large skillet over medium-high heat until hot, preparing it for toasting the bread and melting the cheese.
- Prepare the Bread: Butter the outside of all eight slices of sourdough bread. Place four slices, buttered side down, onto the hot griddle. Top each of those slices with one slice of Provolone cheese.
- Add the Onions and Remaining Bread: Place the remaining four slices of bread, buttered side down, on the griddle separately. Evenly divide the caramelized onions over these slices of bread to prepare for sandwich assembly.
- Toast and Melt: Cook for 3-4 minutes until the bread is golden brown and the cheese has melted. If needed, cover the skillet with a lid to help melt the cheese evenly.
- Assemble the Sandwich: Spread garlic aioli generously over the melted cheese slices. Top each with the thinly sliced sirloin steak. Place the onions-topped bread slices on top to complete each sandwich.
- Serve: Remove the sandwiches from the heat. Transfer onto a cutting board and slice each sandwich in half before serving to enjoy immediately.
Notes
- For best results, cook the steak to your preferred doneness and slice thinly against the grain for tender bites.
- Caramelized onions can be prepared ahead of time and refrigerated to save time during assembly.
- If Provolone is unavailable, Pepper Jack cheese offers a spicy alternative that pairs well with steak.
- Use a lid when melting cheese to ensure thorough melting without burning the bread.
- Serve with a side of fries or a fresh salad to complete the meal.
