This Sloppy Joe Dip recipe transforms the classic sloppy joe sandwich into a cheesy, savory baked dip, perfect for parties and casual gatherings. Ground beef is simmered with rich tomato sauce and spices, layered with melted Colby jack cheese, and baked until bubbly and golden. Serve with fresh sliced French baguette for a delicious crowd-pleasing appetizer.

Ingredients

Scale

Meat and Vegetables

  • 1 pound ground beef (80% lean, 20% fat blend)
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • ½ cup yellow onion, small diced
  • ½ cup red bell pepper, small diced

Seasonings and Sauces

  • 1.31 ounces Sloppy Joe seasoning
  • ½ cup low-sodium beef broth
  • ¼ cup ketchup
  • 1¾ cup tomato puree
  • 2 tablespoons tomato paste
  • 2 teaspoons Worcestershire sauce
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ¼ teaspoon black pepper

Cheese and Bread

  • 2 cups shredded Colby jack cheese
  • 1 fresh French baguette, sliced into ¼-inch pieces

Instructions

  1. Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 375°F. Prepare an 8×8-inch oven-safe casserole dish for baking the dip.
  2. Cook Ground Beef: Heat olive oil in a medium skillet over medium-high heat. Add the ground beef and cook for about 5 minutes, stirring occasionally, until browned and fully cooked. Transfer the beef to a paper towel-lined plate to drain excess fat. Leave 1 tablespoon of fat in the skillet for sautéing vegetables.
  3. Sauté Vegetables: Add diced yellow onion and red bell pepper to the skillet with the reserved fat. Sauté the vegetables for about 5 minutes until tender and fragrant.
  4. Combine Ingredients: Stir in the Sloppy Joe seasoning, low-sodium beef broth, ketchup, tomato puree, tomato paste, Worcestershire sauce, salt, and black pepper to the sautéed vegetables. Mix well. Return the cooked ground beef to the skillet and simmer the mixture on medium heat for 5 minutes to meld flavors. Remove from heat.
  5. Add Cheese and Transfer: Stir in 1 cup of shredded Colby jack cheese into the beef mixture. Pour the dip into the prepared casserole dish and evenly sprinkle the remaining 1 cup of cheese on top.
  6. Bake: Place the casserole dish in the preheated oven and bake for 20 minutes or until the cheese is melted, bubbly, and golden brown on top.
  7. Serve: Remove from oven and let cool slightly before serving. Serve warm with fresh sliced French baguette pieces for dipping.

Notes

  • For extra spice, add a pinch of cayenne pepper or hot sauce to the dip mixture.
  • Use fresh ground beef for best flavor, but you can substitute with ground turkey for a leaner option.
  • Storing leftovers: refrigerate in an airtight container for up to 3 days and reheat gently before serving.
  • Serve with tortilla chips for a crunchy alternative to baguette slices.
