Ingredients
Scale
Toffee Base
- 1 cup unsalted butter
- 1 cup packed dark brown sugar
- ¼ teaspoon salt
- 2 cups crushed pretzels
Topping
- 2 cups semi-sweet chocolate chips
- Flaky sea salt, for topping
Instructions
- Prepare: Preheat your oven to 400 degrees Fahrenheit. Line a 10×15×1 inch baking sheet with aluminum foil and spray it with a non-stick pan spray to prevent sticking.
- Make Toffee Mixture: In a saucepan over medium-high heat, whisk together 1 cup unsalted butter, 1 cup packed dark brown sugar, and ¼ teaspoon salt. Bring the mixture to a boil and let it boil for 4-5 minutes to create the toffee base.
- Combine Pretzels and Toffee: Remove the saucepan from heat and stir in 2 cups of crushed pretzels, mixing well to coat all pretzels evenly with the toffee mixture.
- Spread & Bake: Pour the pretzel and toffee mixture onto the prepared baking sheet. Spread it out as evenly as possible even if it’s not perfectly smooth. Bake in the preheated oven for 5 minutes to set the toffee.
- Layer Chocolate: Remove the baking sheet from the oven and immediately sprinkle 2 cups of semi-sweet chocolate chips evenly over the hot pretzel and toffee.
- Melt Chocolate: Let the chocolate chips sit for about 2 minutes until they melt from the residual heat.
- Spread Chocolate & Add Salt: Use a spatula to spread the melted chocolate evenly over the pretzels and toffee mixture. Sprinkle flaky sea salt on top to enhance the flavor contrast.
- Cool & Serve: Allow the candy to cool completely at room temperature until the chocolate hardens and the toffee sets. Once cooled, crack into pieces and serve or store in an airtight container.
Notes
- Crushing the pretzels into small pieces will help the toffee coat them better.
- Use a high-quality semi-sweet chocolate for the best flavor and smooth melting.
- Flaky sea salt adds a lovely texture and balances the sweetness of the toffee and chocolate.
- This treat can be stored at room temperature in an airtight container for up to 1 week.
- If your kitchen is warm, refrigerate after cooling to keep the candy firm.
