Ingredients
Scale
Beef Patties
- 1 ½ pounds ground beef
- ½ cup yellow onion, finely diced
- 1 teaspoon onion powder
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- Salt and black pepper, to taste
- 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
Gravy and Toppings
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- 1 yellow onion, thinly sliced
- 1 cup baby bella mushrooms, thinly sliced
- 2 packets instant brown gravy mix
- 2 cups water
Instructions
- Prepare Gravy Mixture: In a large mixing bowl, whisk together both packets of instant brown gravy mix with 2 cups of water until smooth and free of lumps. Set aside for later use.
- Season Beef: In another large mixing bowl, combine the ground beef, finely diced yellow onion, onion powder, garlic powder, Worcestershire sauce, salt, and black pepper. Gently fold the mixture until all ingredients are evenly incorporated without overworking the meat.
- Form Patties: Shape the seasoned ground beef into approximately 5 evenly sized patties to ensure uniform cooking.
- Cook Onions and Mushrooms: Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the thinly sliced onions and mushrooms and sauté for 3-4 minutes, stirring occasionally, until softened and fragrant. Push them to one side of the skillet to make room for the patties.
- Sear Patties: Place the patties in the skillet alongside the onions and mushrooms. Cook the patties for 4-5 minutes on each side or until they reach an internal temperature of 165°F (74°C), ensuring they are fully cooked and have a nice sear.
- Prepare Gravy: If there is excess grease in the skillet, carefully drain it. Return the skillet to medium heat and pour in the prepared gravy mixture. Stir continuously until the gravy thickens to your desired consistency and coats the patties and vegetables nicely.
- Serve: Plate the hamburger steaks and spoon the brown gravy with onions and mushrooms on top. Serve immediately over mashed potatoes, rice, or egg noodles for a hearty, comforting meal.
Notes
- Be careful not to overmix the ground beef when seasoning to maintain tender patties.
- Make sure to cook the patties until the internal temperature reaches 165°F for food safety.
- If you prefer a thicker gravy, let it simmer a little longer while stirring to reduce.
- This dish pairs exceptionally well with creamy mashed potatoes or buttered egg noodles.
- Leftovers can be stored in the refrigerator for up to 3 days and reheated gently on the stovetop.
