Ingredients
Scale
Main Ingredients
- 10 ounces large marshmallows (can use mini marshmallows)
- 8 cups Rice Krispies cereal
- 1/4 cup butter
- 1/2 cup marshmallow fluff
- 5–8 drops green food coloring
Decoration
- 1 cup dark chocolate chips
- 1 tablespoon vegetable oil
- 18 large candy eyes
- 9 small Tootsie Rolls
- 1/2 cup black or brown icing
Instructions
- Melt Butter and Marshmallows: In a large skillet, melt butter over medium heat. Once melted, add marshmallows and marshmallow fluff. Stir constantly over medium-high heat until completely melted and smooth.
- Add Green Food Coloring: Add 5-8 drops of green food coloring to the melted marshmallow mixture, stirring well to achieve an even, vibrant green color. Adjust drops as needed for desired shade.
- Combine with Cereal: Quickly pour the green marshmallow mixture into a large bowl with Rice Krispies cereal. Stir thoroughly to coat the cereal evenly. Work fast as the mixture begins to set as it cools.
- Press into Pan: Transfer the mixture to a greased 9×13-inch baking dish. Use a spatula or greased hands to press the mixture evenly into the pan.
- Chill and Cut: Refrigerate for at least 15 minutes until firm. Remove and cut into approximately 3 x 4-inch squares to form Frankenstein heads.
- Melt Chocolate for Dipping: In a microwave-safe bowl, combine dark chocolate chips and vegetable oil. Microwave in 30-second intervals, stirring between each, until smooth and melted. Avoid overheating or adding water to prevent seizing.
- Dip Treats in Chocolate: Dip the top edge (about one inch) of each Rice Krispies square into the melted chocolate. Place on a greased cooling rack or non-stick surface. Chill if needed until chocolate hardens.
- Add Eyes and Mouth: Using black or brown icing, pipe small dots where the candy eyes will be placed. Press candy eyes onto the icing dots for secure attachment. Use the same icing to pipe a mouth below the eyes.
- Attach Tootsie Roll Bolts: Cut Tootsie Rolls in half. Use icing to stick the halves to the sides of the treats, resembling Frankenstein’s bolts.
- Set and Serve: Allow the icing to set completely before serving. Enjoy your festive Frankenstein Rice Krispies Treats!
Notes
- Work quickly when mixing melted marshmallows and cereal to prevent the mixture from hardening prematurely.
- Use greased hands or a spatula when pressing the mixture to prevent sticking.
- Adjust green food coloring to achieve the desired shade of Frankenstein’s skin tone.
- If chocolate seizes (becomes grainy), gently reheat with a small amount of vegetable oil and stir thoroughly.
- Store treats in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 days, or refrigerate to extend freshness.
