  • Author: Elara
  • Total Time: 55 minutes
  • Yield: Approximately 40 mints 1x

Description

These DIY Dog Breath Mints are a healthy, homemade treat designed to freshen your dog’s breath naturally. Made with wholesome ingredients like oats, fresh parsley, mint, and coconut oil, these crunchy mints are simple to prepare and perfect for maintaining your furry friend’s oral hygiene.

Ingredients

Scale

Dry Ingredients

  • 2 1/2 cups old-fashioned oats
  • 1/2 cup parsley (fresh, finely chopped)
  • 1/2 cup mint (fresh, finely chopped)

Wet Ingredients

  • 1 egg (large; for dogs with allergies to chicken, consider a suitable substitute)
  • 1/4 cup water
  • 1 tablespoon water (to help form the dough)
  • 3 tablespoons coconut oil (melted, unrefined extra virgin preferred)

Instructions

  1. Preheat: Preheat your oven to 325° F to prepare for baking the mints.
  2. Prepare Oat Flour: Add the old-fashioned oats to a blender and pulse until they reach a fine, flour-like consistency.
  3. Make Dough: In a large bowl, whisk together the finely chopped parsley and mint with the egg, 1/4 cup of water, and melted coconut oil. Add the oat flour to this mixture and stir until combined. Knead the dough gently a few times to bring it together, then transfer it onto a lightly floured surface.
  4. Shape Mints: Using your hands or a rolling pin, flatten the dough to about 1/8 inch thickness. Cut out approximately 40 one-inch-sized mints using a cookie cutter or a knife.
  5. Arrange and Bake: Place the cut mints about 1/4 inch apart on a parchment-lined or non-stick baking sheet. Bake in the preheated oven for 35 to 40 minutes or until they turn golden brown and crispy.
  6. Cool and Store: Let the mints cool completely on a wire rack before serving to your dog. Store the cooled mints in an airtight container to maintain freshness.

Notes

  • Use unrefined extra virgin coconut oil for the best flavor and health benefits.
  • If your dog is allergic to eggs, substitute with an appropriate egg replacer or consult your vet for alternatives.
  • Ensure the mints are fully cooled before giving them to your dog to avoid burns or choking hazards.
  • Store the breath mints in an airtight container at room temperature; they should keep fresh for up to two weeks.
  • Consult a veterinarian before introducing any new treats, especially if your dog has dietary restrictions or health issues.
