Cinnamon Ornaments Recipe

  • Author: Elara
  • Total Time: 3 hours 45 minutes
  • Yield: Approximately 12-15 medium-sized ornaments depending on cutter size 1x

Description

Create charming and aromatic cinnamon ornaments using simple ingredients like ground cinnamon, allspice, and cinnamon applesauce. These non-edible decorative pieces are perfect for adding a festive scent and rustic touch to your holiday décor.

Ingredients

Scale

Spices & Flavoring

  • ⅔ cup ground cinnamon, divided (plus 12 additional tablespoons, optional)
  • 2 tbsp ground allspice

Binding Agent

  • ½ cup cinnamon applesauce

Instructions

  1. Preheat Oven and Prepare Baking Sheet: Preheat your oven to 200 degrees Fahrenheit and line a baking sheet with parchment paper to prevent sticking.
  2. Mix Dry Ingredients: In a medium mixing bowl, whisk together ⅔ cup ground cinnamon and 2 tablespoons ground allspice until evenly combined.
  3. Add Applesauce and Form Dough: Add ½ cup cinnamon applesauce to the dry ingredients and stir to form a semi-firm dough. If the mixture is too wet, gradually add up to 1 tablespoon more cinnamon until you achieve a sugar cookie dough consistency that holds together but isn’t sticky.
  4. Knead Dough: Use your hands to knead the dough into a cohesive ball. If it feels crumbly, sprinkle a few drops of water to bind it, being careful not to make it wet.
  5. Roll Out Dough: Cut two large parchment paper pieces. Place one on your countertop and the dough ball on top, then cover with the second piece. Use a rolling pin to roll the dough out to about ¼ to ½ inch thickness, thick enough to prevent breaking but knowing thicker pieces need longer baking.
  6. Cut Out Shapes: Use cookie cutters to cut festive shapes. Carefully transfer the shapes to the prepared baking sheet using a spatula.
  7. Make Hanging Holes: Using a drinking straw, cut out a hole in each shape for hanging. Ensure the hole is well away from the edges to prevent breakage.
  8. Bake Ornaments: Bake in the oven for 3-4 hours, or until fully hardened and firm in the center. Optionally, flip the ornaments gently halfway through baking to promote even color and drying.
  9. Cool and Decorate: Remove from oven and allow ornaments to cool completely on the baking sheet. Once cool, string with Christmas ribbon and decorate as desired to personalize your festive décor.

Notes

  • Ensure dough consistency is like sugar cookie dough—not too wet or crumbly—for best shaping.
  • Be gentle when transferring cut-outs to prevent cracking.
  • Ornaments are decorative and not edible.
  • Adjust oven times slightly if your oven temperature varies.
  • These ornaments make great handmade gifts or holiday decorations.
