Butter Mints Recipe

  • Author: Elara
  • Total Time: 12 to 24 hours drying time
  • Yield: Approximately 100-120 mints 1x
  • Diet: Vegetarian

Description

Delightfully creamy and melt-in-your-mouth Butter Mints flavored with vanilla and peppermint. These pastel-colored, bite-sized treats are perfect for holiday gatherings or anytime you want a sweet, refreshing candy that’s easy to make at home.

Ingredients

Scale

Butter Mint Dough

  • ½ cup unsalted butter (1 stick, room temperature)
  • 4 cups powdered sugar (sifted)
  • 2 Tablespoons heavy cream
  • ½ teaspoon vanilla extract
  • ½ teaspoon peppermint extract
  • ⅛ teaspoon salt

Optional Coloring

  • Red, green, and yellow water-based food coloring (optional)

Instructions

  1. Beat Butter: In a large mixing bowl, use a hand or stand mixer to beat the unsalted butter until smooth and creamy, creating a soft base for the mints.
  2. Add Powdered Sugar: Gradually add the sifted powdered sugar one cup at a time, mixing on low speed to fully incorporate it without creating a sugar cloud.
  3. Mix Flavorings and Cream: Add the heavy cream, vanilla extract, peppermint extract, and salt. Continue mixing until the dough forms a smooth, cohesive mass. If it feels dry, add a few drops more of heavy cream to achieve a pliable texture.
  4. Divide Dough: Split the dough evenly into four portions. Keep one portion plain (white) and set aside.
  5. Color the Dough (Optional): Add a tiny drop of red food coloring to one portion and knead to achieve pastel pink, a small drop of green for pastel green, and a drop of yellow for pastel yellow. Adjust intensities with additional drops as needed.
  6. Shape the Mints: Roll each colored dough portion into thin ropes about ½ inch in diameter. Using a sharp knife, cut the ropes into small ½-inch pieces.
  7. Dry the Mints: Place the pieces spaced apart on a parchment-lined baking sheet. Allow them to air dry at room temperature for 12 to 24 hours until firm and set.
  8. Store and Enjoy: Transfer the firm mints to an airtight container to keep them fresh. Enjoy these melt-in-your-mouth treats anytime.

Notes

  • Ensure the powdered sugar is sifted for the smoothest dough.
  • Use water-based food coloring to avoid altering the candy’s texture.
  • Air drying times may vary depending on humidity; wait until mints are fully firm before storing.
  • Keep mints in an airtight container to maintain freshness and prevent them from drying out further.
  • If dough is too sticky, add a bit more powdered sugar to reach the right consistency.
